The titanium surface has a layer of passivation film that can not be used directly as an anode during salt water electrolysis. After coating the titanium surface with an active coating, it can become an anode with good corrosion resistance and conductivity.
Similarly, when other valve metals are directly used as anodes, a strong oxide layer is formed on the surface, which causes the resistance preventing the current from passing to increase rapidly, making it impossible to circulate large amounts of electricity into the electrolyte without increasing the voltage. Therefore, it is very uneconomical to use valve metal as anode directly in the electrolysis process. A conductive electrocatalytic active coating shall be applied to the valve-type metal electrode matrix.
